American Cancer Society - Relay for Life Woodland Hills
at Los Angeles Pierce College
APRIL 28-29, 2012
Message from Jim Adlhoch: As one of the official event chairs for the Relay for Life event this year and a cancer survivor, I want to express how amazing it was to see so many Rotarians at the event; it was, in part, why I joined Rotary. A dear friend of mine put together the video you see above to celebrate "The Gift." There are many Rotarians, friends and family, that have been touched by cancer. Relay for Life celebrates just that, the gift of LIFE. Please reach out to me for questions, and I look forward to special Relay for Life hugs the day of the event!
In its fourth year, the Rotary Club of Woodland Hills will be represented at the 2012 American Cancer Society's Relay for Life to be held at Los Angeles Pierce College on April 28, 2011 for 24 hours.
About Relay For Life
Teams of people camp out at Pierce College and take turns walking or running around the track at the college football stadium. Each team is asked to have a representative on the track at all times during the event. Relays are 24 hours in length; representing the reality that cancer never sleeps. By participating, you honor cancer survivors, pay tribute to the lives we've lost to the disease, and raise money to help fight cancer in our community.
Last year there was amazing participation in the event with walkers, "virtual" walkers who couldn't walk but cheered everyone on, and those who donated to the cause. This is a fantastic opportunity to participate in an event that will change your life!
Remembering and Honoring Those Touched by Cancer
One important aspect of the American Cancer Society Relay For Life is the opportunity for people to come together to remember loved ones lost to cancer and honor those who have won their battle. One of the most moving parts of the event is the Luminaria Ceremony.
As the sun sets over campsites and darkness falls, the night is brightened by the glow of illuminated bags called luminaria, each bearing the name of someone who has battled cancer. Some celebrate cancer survivors, while others help us honor and remember those that have been lost to this disease. All represent someone special who has been profoundly affected by cancer and the family and friends who continue to fight back in their honor.
Your luminaria donation to the American Cancer Society will light the path for those walking through the night to fight back against cancer.
